Wonderspaces

Wonderspaces is an interactive art exhibit in San Diego that runs for about three months and then travels to new cities. It partners with artists to create a place where people can connect with art and with each other.

I learned about this exhibit last year, and didn’t get the opportunity to attend because tickets were sold out. I didn’t know if they were going to return again, but I registered for their newsletter just in case. Because of this, I got first dibs to tickets before it is open to the public! This year’s theme is “In Common” and let me tell you, it was quite interesting!

There are 13 exhibits that you are able to explore. Each one has a very unique interpretation of what we have “In Common.”

Confessions by Candy Chang for example gave individuals the opportunity to write confessions, like the one below:

In other exhibits, you walked through dark rooms and saw digital displays like these:

Other rooms were much more colorful:

One was only sound. You listen to what seems like cars crashing in a dark room. Very disturbing.

There are two installations that you have to sign up for in order to see. The first installation acted like a maze.

There are many black doors; you are told to put goggles on, and audio-phones to listen to different sounds. And then you’re guided into a room. You are not able to see anything, but with the rope obstacles inside you are encouraged to use your imagination.

And I left the best for last. The second wait-listed exhibit uses virtual reality goggles, audio-phones, and controls. You are taken through three chapters that ask some very deep questions. You listen to the responses from others, and you can even record your own responses too!

This one was the most impactful for me because it really hit the “In Common” theme. It also made me very emotional. Unlike other pop up exhibits, this one is not really geared towards a lot of picture taking; which is very refreshing. It’s more about using your senses and interacting with the art. If you get a chance, definitely visit Wonderspaces this summer!
